University teachers had demonstrated their strength and unity in fighting for a pay hike and it was up to the authorities concerned to take steps to grant their demand without any further delay, the Federation of University Teachers’ Associations (FUTA) said yesterday.
President of the Federation Dr. Nirmal Ranjith Devasiri told a press conference in Colombo yesterday that around 90 percent of the total number of university teachers in the country had joined the FUTA trade union action by resigning from administrative posts they held on a voluntary basis. Teachers’ trade union action had crippled some universities and the FUTA now move to the next phase of trade union action since that would bring the entire university system to a standstill, he said.
Dr Devasiri said the FUTA hoped that the government would consider its demand favourably without compelling it to step up its trade union action.
He said the government had reneged on a promise it made in 2010 to increase university teachers’ salaries.
