President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday said the government will recruit 1,500 graduates as management trainees in the state banks under a decision taken in the budget proposal last year.

Addressing a function held at the Temple Trees yesterday to hand over appointment letters to 227 new recruits as trainees in the People's Bank, the President emphasized that the government's policy was to provide jobs according to qualifications and fill the vacancies at the government institutes with the aptly qualified candidates.

The trainees are to be given proper training and absorbed into the state bank service. Trainees will also be recruited to the Bank of Ceylon.

Chairman of the People's Bank, W.G. Karunajeewa said this was the first time such a large number of trainees were recruited to the People's Bank.

Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning, Geethanjana Gunawardena and Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunge were also present.
