UGC claims SL Medical Council in contempt of Court

The University Grants Commission has filed a motion in the Supreme Court that the Sri Lanka Medical Council was not duly complying with a Supreme Court order, of March 30, 2011, to cooperate with the UGC to told the Act 16 exam.

The motion said that this amounts to contempt of Court, the UGC has said.

The original petitioner Lakshman Ariyawansa, a foreign medical graduate, has complained to the Court that the authorities in Sri Lanka have failed to hold the Act 16 examination for them.

Since they were unable to sit the Act 16 exam and qualify, they were unable to get registered with the SLMC and practice as medical officer in Sri Lanka.

Deputy Solicitor General Sanjay Rajaratnam appeared for the UGC.

The case will called again on June 28, 2011.

The Bench comprised the Chief Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake and Justices P. A. Ratnayake and R. K. S. Sureshchandra.
