Higher Education Minister S. B. Dissanayake said that he expected the conflict between university lecturers’ unions and the government to be resolved by next week.
Several lecturers protested in front of Sri Jayawardenapura University in conjunction with Dissanayake’s visit there on Friday (17). The Federation of University Teacher’s Association (FUTA) has been calling for a salary hike for the past few weeks.
“The SLFP university lecturers union has asked that at least salary anomalies from 2008 be settled,” Dissanayake said. He added that this might be possible as the President had pledged to settle such anomalies in the Budget proposal. He added that a proposal by the unions would be handed over at least by Saturday (18).
