University mess

The university crisis is much in the news these days––firstly the University Teachers’ Trade Union Action and secondly the leadership training for the new entrants to universities.

As for the training, if it had been available much earlier for persons like the present Minister of Higher Education S. B. Dissanayake and the present Chairman of the University Grants Commission Prof. Gamini Samaranayake, perhaps the University system would not have been in the present mess.

Undergraduate Dissanayake could have learnt how to abide by university rules and regulations specially in university hostels with clear thinking.

Undergraduate Samaranayake could have learnt how to guide university teachers and students in a much better way.

If salaries are going to be paid only to those who work, wonder how many in the public service will get paid.

If the current leadership programme is unsuccessful and ragging still persists in universities, Dr. S. Nawaratne, the Secretary of the Ministry as the Chief Accounting Officer, should be made fully responsible and made to pay the cost of the project.

I wish the Universities and its students all the best.
