Teachers challenge leadership training for University entrants

By Chitra Weerarathne

The Ceylon Teachers’ Union and its Secretary yesterday petitioned the Supreme Court, against the recent decision of the Ministry of Higher Education and the University Grants Commission, to compel the new entrants to undergo leadership training at military camps.

The petitioners said that the students were not told about the mandatory requirement when they sat the GCE Advanced Level Examination in 2010. The leadership training was not at all related to the course of study the new entrants hoped to follow at the University.

The petitioners had requested the Court to compel the respondent authorities not to proceed with that arbitrary programme until the petition was heard and determined by the Court.

Meanwhile, a group of students had filed intervenient petitions, supporting the petition of the Teachers Union.
