The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) affiliated Inter University Students Federation (IUSF) has called on the government to immediately resolve the issues faced by the academics to prevent the country's university system from experiencing a downfall.
IUSF Convener, Sanjeewa Bandara says that a majority of the universities have now become dysfunctional with students facing many difficulties due to the union action commenced by the university academics demanding a salary increase.
He said the country's higher education sector is experiencing a downfall due to the current situation.
According to Bandara, although the union action seemed to only affect the administration operations, it has affected the academic activities in the universities as well.
He charged that the government was responsible for the current situation as it has failed to resolve the issues faced by the academics since 2008.
