FUTA Threatens Legal Action

University lecturers have threatened to resort to legal action if the government decides to withhold their salaries for the month of May.
The Federation of University Teachers Association (FUTA) has said legal action will be taken against the University Grants Commission (UGC) if the due salaries for May are not paid to the lecturers due to the ongoing union action.
Head of FUTA, Nimal Dewasiri has told the media that the UGC did not have the mandate to order Vice Chancellors of universities to withhold the salaries of the academics for the month of May.
He has said the academics are not on strike and that they have resigned only from the voluntary administrative positions.
According to Dewasiri, the university lecturers have carried out the duties entitled to them.
The UGC has issued a circular to university vice chancellors asking them not to pay the May salaries to university lecturers who have resorted to trade union action to demand a salary hike.
